This special example of pink smithsonite has to be one of the overall finest of its style in thumbnail size, for overall quality. It features a dramatic, diagonal crystal atop a natural pedestal of smaller crystals; and the large crystal is 2.7 cm tip to tip! The color is due to cobalt, and in this case is the desirable hot pink hue. This specimen was formerly from the important collection of Jim Minette, one of the most prominent thumbnail collectors of the 1900s, and comes with label to that effect (from 2008, when sold by Dave Bunk). Jim had a very choice and refined collection — since this was in it, that says a lot. Laszlo Kupi photo.
