The shocking, grape juice color of this Yaogangxian fluorite is as saturated as you could want - dark but not too dark. Color Color Color...and then beyond that, geometry and pristine perfection make this a treasure. It is complete with no repairs, pristine and without a ding or scratch on it. Having been to China probably 100 times, and seriously focused on China minerals since 2002, I can only emphasize again how rare such a piece is. This color, this style, came out in the early years of Chinese mineral exports, what some call the Golden Age of a flood of Chinese minerals that has now slowed down. As much as you think you see now, it is a big and dramatic decrease in quantity and often in quality from the early 2000s production at most of China's now-famous mines. This is an iconic style and color for YGX fluorite, but the last time I saw one this good come out was the early 2000s. We bought this in China and I suspect it is from exactly that era of production, as some old stashes and collections came to market during COVID and, when I returned to China after the closures, there was a variety of older material suddenly (briefly) available and I went on a buying spree. This was one of those lucky purchases. It may not seem big from the sizes, but it has outsized impact in the hand, in a case, or just sitting in a box. The large crystal is 3.2 cm across. The vertical display with accent of calcite at the base, really makes it. Note under fluorescence, the calcite having a slight manganese orange glow; and the geometric sharp phantom lines within the fluorite.

Calcite from Yaogangxian Mine, China
from the Yaogangxian Mine is not merely an accessory carbonate on famous Chinese fluorites; at its best it is one of the visual signatures of the locality. Collectors most often encounter it as crisp white to pale pink “poker-chip” aggregates, bladed rosettes, stacked pagoda-like sprays, steep scalenohedra, or flattened rhombohedral groups perched on fluorite, quartz, ferberite, scheelite, muscovite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and other Yaogangxian species. The appeal lies in contrast: delicate, pearly calcite set against glassy purple or blue-green fluorite; pink manganese-bearing calcite on sparkling quartz; or a single water-clear calcite twin rising from metallic black ferberite.
