Tucson, Arizona, USABixbyite, or more correctly, Bixbyite-(Mn), is a manganese iron oxide which is found as good crystals throughout the Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah, USA. Particularly large crystals are found at the Solar Wind claim which is where this fine miniature originates. A pure specimen of Bixbyite contains no iron, but such a beast is very rare and often contains as much iron as it does manganese. This is analogous to the iron content in most Sphalerite. A single, well developed Bixbyite crystal of white silver with a bright metallic lustre forms an approximately 1.2 cm cube with corners bevelled to the octahedron. The specimen is attached to a small matrix of Topaz mixed with pale grey rhyolite and comes mounted on a clear acrylic base.
