This is a great, "Matterhorn-looking", blue Spinel from Burma that at first glance looks like a sapphire but is instead an extremely strange growth pattern for spinel: It's an elongated octahedron with abundant stepped growth features and striations perpendicular to its length. The exterior is slightly rounded from being waterworn and the exterior belies its interior as, within, it is almost totally gemmy and with a gorgeous blue color! So, it looks better with a little backlighting to make it glow. This rare blue Spinel has a mass of 4.0 grams, and at first glance, it could easily be confused for a sapphire for the shape and color. Blue spinel is surely the absolute rarest of the spinel family of natural colors in the gem world, and this crystal from Burma would be unique from anywhere.
