A large and very fine example of Cerussite from Broken Hill, the famous Australian mining complex known for many lead and silver minerals throughout 150+ years of mining, but from which Cerussite crystals were always rare. This style with robust crystals and luster looks like material from later finds at Tsumeb, but actually came out in the early 1900s and these are old classics seen only in museums and the oldest of collections. The richness and clustering here is subtly different from Tsumeb material which came out much later. The small attached matrix underneath the specimen here is a distinctive old Broken Hill gossan matrix with a color and texture distinct from Tsumeb material. The beautiful reticulated "snowflake" twins are up to 4 cm across and just fascinating in their geometry! These do turn up time to time in old collections and usually are more representative than showy, but this is an important display specimen precisely because it has complex forms and structure and luster to rival Tsumeb! This is from the collections of Dick Hauck and George Elling who both pursued the old classics and classic mining localities for nearly 60 years each.
