Millerite
This exceptionally fine small cabinet specimen of Millerite on ironstone is from the Coed-Ely Colliery in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Coed Ely is about 25 km northwest of Cardiff. Please note: the delicate acicular needles of Millerite project out above the Siderite-lined vug in which they have formed and so must be handled with particular care. Look at the specimen first before handling as one wrong placement of a finger will crush the group! This aside, it is a superb group with crystals measuring to 2 cm long as lustrous, silvery siskin green needles in two distinct diverging sprays. Coed-Ely Colliery is probably the most famous of all the Millerite-producing coal mines in South Wales, this mine sadly closed in November 1986. The specimen is accompanied by two earlier collector's labels and a Nick Carruth stock label.
