Cuprite
Onganja mine is a small rural operation on Helen Farm 235, some 90 km north west of the Namibia's capital, Windhoek. This small and rather insignificant mine became world famous for its superb, large and complexly crystallised Cuprite specimens, nearly always coated with light minty green Malachite. This splendid example is composed of one main Cuprite crystal, 3.6 cm across, with three attached smaller Cuprite crystals, each of between 2 and 2.4 cm wide. The Cuprite forms cuboctahedral crystals modified to the rhombdodecahedral, whose surfaces are a smooth, yet pitted, finely crystallised layer of hard acicular Malachite. The underside of the specimen reveals glassy crimson-red metallic Cuprite. An excellent Malachite coated Cuprite from Onganja.
