Tucson, Arizona, USAThe wonderful Lavrion mining district on the Attica Peninsula in southern Greece is host to over 600 mineral species, an amazing large number for any of the world's greatest localities. Smithsonite is however one of its signature minerals, found in just about every mine, but rarely of the size and quality of this specimen. Forming large mamillated botryoidal mounds, this is an almost pure white-cream Smithsonite, containing very few impurities and quite striking for this reason. The hillocky sub-hemispheres attain 4.5 cm diameter and are translucent with subtle yet distinct banding. The Smithsonite covers a matrix of layered Smithsonite and limonite-stained marble. Back-lit, the combination of internal zoning and underlying matrix results in graduated shades of white, cream and light grey. A terrific Smithsonite so typical of the Lavrion district at its best.
