The mines at Styrian Erzberg, which date back to before the 12th Century, are famed for their various forms of Aragonite. This coral-like specimen is quite spectacular in that it resembles a number of forms of sea-life! A vertical rib of pale lemon-tinged creamy-white Aragonite develops into a sinuous array of narrow rounded stalagmitic crystals which closely resemble the tentacles of a sea-anemone. The tip of each stalagmite is tinged mid-tan and around their bases, the Aragonite's colour intensifies to a deeper lemon-cream, giving a most aesthetic effect. At one end of the specimen a much broader stalagmite protrudes, about 17 mm wide at its base, making the entire specimen resemble an exotic sea-slug. The point of attachment (while in situ) measures 8.8 cm long by between 2 and 0.8 cm wide along the base of the specimen, making for a level and stable display base. A beautiful and fascinating specimen of Aragonite from Austria.
