Description
Erythrite specimens from the Mount Cobalt Mine, a well-known Co-As and Cu deposit in Queensland, Australia, are renowned in old books and literature but rarely seen for sale or even seen at all outside major Aussie museums. And even among them, this is such a striking, small-cabinet specimen that I hardly know where to begin in describing it. Clustered in radiating, mounded tufts, the Erythrite grows in sharp, acicular needles up to about 5 mm. The deep, maroon-metallic-pink color is gorgeous, and the superb luster almost bordering on metallic, takes the color and makes it simply dazzling in a case. It looks like hot pink metallic steel wool fibers. What makes this truly significant and outstanding is the sheer volume of the Erythrite. Most often simply a coating the matrix in thin layers or individual sprays, this piece has a literal seam of Erythrite on the matrix that ranges from 1.5-2.5 cm thick! Most specimens were collected from the 1970s to early 1990s, and amazing, aesthetic pieces like this, with such size and richness, are almost unheard of.
Known provenanceKnowing where your specimen comes from and who owned it adds to its story and value. Good provenance helps prove it's authentic and preserves important details about its discovery.
