Willemite is famous from New Jersey and a very few other localities. What many people do not know is that Tsumeb actually produced some of the world's best wilemites, found in hues of brown, yellow, and even blue - but they were rare and seldom seen. This sparkling specimen is a relatively large piece from a single pocket of the 1980s, known for GEM willemite crystals of this sparkling, champagne color. The thin solid willemite plate is nearly complete on both sides, almost a floater. It has sharp crystals to a few millimeters that must be in the hundreds, and together look like a sugary coating. The whole piece is completely translucent to transparent too! We have had thumbnails and about half a dozen specimens of this material over the years with colors ranging from brown to amber in hue. This is somewhere in the middle of that color spectrum; we felt that champagne color is the way to best describe it. It is a remarkably large willemite for Tsumeb and of a very rare style! Chet Lemanski purchased this treasure in 1998 from our friends, Si and Ann Frazier of Frazier's Minerals. His catalog says: A superb specimen comprised entirely of beige-colored, crystallized willemite on both large sides.
