Danburite

This has to be one of the best pegmatite Danburite crystals in this size class we have ever seen from anywhere and it's from Burma! (Dr. Tom Campbell, our staff mineralogist who taught pegmatite mineralogy, agreed!). This unique Danburite crystal is lustrous and largely transparent with an intense golden-amber color that is hard to describe because it has a special saturation that does not convey well with these usual color terms. Crystal faces on this exceptional, mostly transparent crystal are remarkably sharply formed and glassy. At the base of the crystal, it is apparent that the Danburite grew over a pre-existing mineral, possibly Albite, and this inclusion or "phantom" is quite obvious through the transparent Danburite. There are a couple of insignificant imperfections near the termination, and it is only contacted at the base where it was removed from the pocket. This was the finest Danburite crystal Bill was aware from Burma, and it was a significant piece from this collection, built in the heyday of production between 1990-2008, in a way that cannot be replicated today. This gem Danburite is excellent for the species, and certainly exceptional for Burma. It is simply riveting in person for color, luster and style. It is, frankly, a miracle that it was not cut and faceted to yield an intensely colored gemstone (although it could be...). 17.06 grams. Mark Mauthner photo.
