Wodginite Epitaxial on Cassiterite
This is a superb, sharp, and highly lustrous Wodginite specimen, often misidentified as Ixiolite. This find was made in the 1980's, and it turns out that, through analysis, the Wodginite is epitaxial over a near-vanished core of Cassiterite. The intergrown crystals are excellent, and the luster is so much better in person, it looks like polished obsidian. These are very hard to come by today. I am told that the pocket was only the size of a basketball and the find limited to some dozens of specimens. At 3.2 cm, it is one of the larger pieces and therefore quite significant. When these first made an appearance at major mineral shows some 30 years ago, they were a big hit with collectors because of their odd formation. Richard Gaines, a well-known collector on the East Coast at the time, had the pocket in entirety. This is surely from his dealer stock, with an old label from my old friend Larry Conklin to whom he had sold many pieces. Featured in the book Collecting Classics: The Legacy of Kay Robertson (Mineralogical Record, May 2025) on page 67.
