Covellite (Illustrated!)
Covellites from Summitville have always been compared favorably to the famous Covellites from Butte but are far more rarely seen from the mining heyday here. This one is rather unusual, and interesting for several reasons: There is some amount of iridescence, mostly flashes of purple, blue, and gold, which is always good; and the blades show definite growth patterns, which is always interesting. The real show-stopper, though, is the isolation of the black Covellite blades which are smallish for Colorado but super sharp and freestanding when they are usually found in ugly , foliated masses. The largest of these black Covellite crystals reaches an impressive 3 cm in length! A significant small cab from a famous mining district, this was originally in the well-known collection of Mitchell Gunnell (a Colorado specialist, in fact). This is an unusual and special, rare specimen from a historic era in Colorado, and part of Kay's treasured Colorado suite.
