Cobalt-bearing Calcites from Morocco are considered among the finest in the world, and those from Bou Azzer contribute greatly to this reputation. This large cabinet specimen has hundreds of lustrous, 8 mm rhombs of these Calcites spread nicely across the piece. Some are a pearly-white with pink highlights, but the vast majority are such vibrant, deep pink that anyone's bubble gum fix would be satisfied. It is fascinating that the excellent color and pearly nature to the crystals create what can best described as a remarkable and unusual 'velvet' look to the crystals. Large and aesthetic, this is a great Cobalt-Bearing Calcite because it is so different from others and nicely shows a gradient of color, as a result of what is likely a gradient of chemistry in formation.
