A shockingly large display specimen of Witherite not from the usual localities for the species, but from this important and historic mine in Germany! This is an impressive, lustrous Witherite cluster that easily competes with any other specimen in its size range. When we think of Witherite, Cave-In-Rock, Illinois and and Alston Moor, England immediately come to mind, not Shaft 371 in Hartenstein, Germany. In fact mindat.org only has one photo of Witherite from this locality! The largest crystal on this remarkable piece, which may be actually one huge compound crystal itself, measures a considerable three inches across! There are other distinct crystals that comprise this stately piece near the base and all of them are well formed and display a uniform and subtle, pale green-yellow tint. Believe it or not, this piece is complete and undamaged all around 360 degrees and shows only three very inconspicuous places where it may have been attached (contacted) to tiny shards of matrix in the pocket. The rear of the piece doesn't look quite as sharp as the front, but is nonetheless very good as well. The Shaft 371 Mine was mined for uranium, silver, cobalt and bismuth between 1959 and 1991. A world-class Witherite by any standard! Ex. Simone and Peter Huber collection with label. Comes with a custom engraved acrylic base to stand vertically.
