A GEMMY, translucent to transparent 2.3 cm crystal surmounts a shard of matrix on this absolutely classic style of Red Cloud wulfenite! This is said to have been mined by Ed Over, who found the best wulfenites ever here by most accounts; and the style of this crystal certainly matches with others I have seen from the era of collecting (approximately 60-70 years ago). I think it likely that it is, in fact, from that era (whether from Ed or not, I cannot say) ....but I am young and wasn't around then: Wayne Thompson, who knows as much about the mine as anybody, having collected there since he was a child 50 years ago and then run a mining operation in the mid-1990s, is confident of it. Good enough for me. This crystal is outstanding, about an inch across, briliantly colored red-orange, and fat. It has more gemminess than you normally see in large crystals as well. It is pristine, although with a few bits of ingrown matrix as the only possible criticism.
