A set of two lustrous crystals and crystal groupings of deep green slightly translucent epidote. Nice for this classic Austrian locality. Size is provided for the larger of the two examples.Knappenwand, located in the Untersulzbach Valley of the Hohe Tauern mountain range in Salzburg, Austria, is internationally renowned as one of the world's most famous historic alpine mineral localities. Geologically, the area consists of Mesozoic schists and gneisses where alpine tectonic and metamorphic processes created alpine-type fissures containing rich hydrothermal mineral assemblages. Historically, commercial and systematic specimen mining began in the nineteenth century, most notably under the Austrian mining entrepreneur and collector Ignaz von Weidinger, producing legendary specimens that populate major museums worldwide. Mineralogically, Knappenwand is the type locality for world-class, exceptionally sharp, dark green prismatic epidote crystals, frequently associated with massive pink to white adularia feldspar, quartz, and calcite.
