Sugilite in large specimens is incredibly rare in the world, but for that matter ANY example of this species is hard to obtain - and specimen grade pieces like this have come from only a few small pockets of material amidst many larger finds of more lapidary or carving grade material. This would have to rank as one of the finer small-cabinet-sized display pieces of quality from one of the most important finds of this beautiful and very rare species from the Kalahari Manganese Field, a pocket from 2016. Saturated color and velvety sheen make this specimen, with masses of flat-lying wirelike crystals to 2 cm, a stunning piece. There were only a few pieces of this magnitude found, and the style of this pocket is very unique compared to other discoveries of the mineral.
