Nice branching crystallized grouping of native copper with little attached matrix.The Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan is world famous for its unique geology, boasting some of the largest deposits of native copper on Earth. Formed during the Midcontinent Rift about one billion years ago, basaltic lava flows and interbedded conglomerates became mineralized when hydrothermal fluids deposited native copper into pore spaces and fault fractures. Indigenous peoples mined the surface copper for millennia before commercial mining boomed in the mid-19th century following the official geological reports of 1841. This sparked the first major American metal mining rush, establishing the region as a global industrial powerhouse for copper production until deep-rock mining declined and ultimately ceased in the late 20th century.
