OUTSTANDING and dramatic, this small-cabinet sized cluster of Powellite is from the Nashik District of India. Such crystals are classics, but rarely do you see them in such quality and complete condition. The intergrown crystals, all made up of interconnected, geometric Powellite, create a sculptural aesthetic that is pristine on the presentation side, and all around. It is complete, simply with the contact on the back where it came off or grew on matrix in a pocket. The straw-yellow, translucent-to-gemmy, tetragonal crystals are sharp, with the largest crystal being 5 cm on edge. The Powellites can be dipyramidal, with a nice variation of chisel and spike terminations on the viewing side. Subtle and fine striations really enhance the glassy-to-resinous luster on the crystal faces, and the Powellite has the expected yellow SW UV fluorescence. Rotation of the presentation side presents a distinctively different aspects of form, with the color and luster being remarkably uniform. Powellite is the rarest and most desirable mineral from the famed basalts of the Deccan Traps of India. Large and sharp crystal clusters like this are almost unheard of today, and this piece is a killer for the species from a surprise find of 2024-25. The best of species were found in the late 1990s, and looked much like this - we have not seen this caliber since that time.
