Gem Topaz has been mined at Ouro Preto in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil since the 18th century. Usually, Topaz crystals are colourless and wedge-shaped, but on rare occasions they can be blue, yellow, orange or even pink and show very different crystal shapes. At Ouro Preto a variety of Topaz is found which is much prized and is given the name 'Imperial Topaz'. This variety, which is usually sherry to golden-orange in colour, was not named after the discoveries at Ouro Preto, but from finds in Russia during the early 19th century, but the Brazilian crystals are exceptional. Intense pink crystals are the rarest of all and always small. This small (1.2 cm tall) thumbnail-sized individual off-matrix crystal shows the classic terminated prismatic form of the Ouro Preto Topaz crystals but with a stunning raspberry to strawberry-pink colour. If this was the standard orange colour it would be a relatively insignificant crystal, but colour makes everything here, and this one is magnificent.
