Smithsonite (570)

Unknown Owner
Colorless spherical shape crystal groupings of slightly translucent smithsonite measuring to 1.5 cm in diameter aesthetic up on matrix. In great condition, very choice for the species from this classic mining district. This specimen was on public display at the 2026 Tucson Gem and Mineral show. Mining in Lavrion, Greece is one of the oldest mining traditions in Europe and dates back to ancient Greek times. Silver rich lead ores were mined from deposits in carbonate rocks and the silver helped support the economy of ancient Athens. Mining continued intermittently through later centuries and expanded again during the 19th century with modern mining methods.
