First discovered at Owyhee Dam in Oregon in the middle of the last century, cavansite became a worldwide phenomenon with the production out of the amazing Deccan Trap discoveries in the late 1900's. The dense, well-formed clusters of cavansite on this small-cabinet piece reach up to 2.8 cm across, and the vibrant blue color is outstanding for the species. So we have big size crystal cluster AND highly saturated, almost neon color which makes this a higher level of play than 99 percent of others. Where the radial growth of the crystals is exposed by small sprays of loosely grown crystals outside of the tight spherical growths, the vitreous luster imparts an incredible, 'electric blue' look that absolutely shimmers. Our favorite cavansites are those that show both crystal habits, as you see here, in contrast. The cavansites are nestled atop many classic, doubly-terminated stilbites, up to 1.6 cm, that are sharp and have an attractive, pearlescent luster. There may still be many cavansite specimens out there, but the aesthetics and quality of this combination would rank it highly. Also important is the awareness that the cavansite localities are now completely closed due to encroaching development, thus their available numbers will continue to diminish. Formerly in the collection of Yvonne & Ed Richard, an old piece likely from the early 2000s era. This quarry is nearly exhausted, with under 80 meters of less rich zone to be mined as of 2026, even as the other end of the quarry is being backfilled with garbage from nearby residential growth. Sadly, time will tell that cavansite of this quality was a generational mineral, here and gone again within a few decades in the quality we love. Specimens of this magnitude are to be treasured, as they probably won't be found again - at least not in Wagholi Quarry.
