Smithsonite, the New Mexico Mineral Museum’s flagship specimen known as the “C. T. Brown smithsonite no. 793,” 61 cm (75 pounds), from the famous Kelly mine in the Magdalena District of New Mexico. Collected in 1880s or 1890s, it is one of the best of the larger blue-green Kelly pieces to survive. It was acquired by the prominent mining engineer and state senator Cony Thomas Brown (1856–1926), a staunch supporter and benefactor of the School of Mines, and passed to the school with the rest of Brown’s mineral cabinet in 1938.
