Duftite on Malachite ps. after Azurite
Tsumeb is of course the world king of pseudomorphs, complex mineral replacements that tell a story of how these minerals form in series and sequence in pockets deep in the earth. The more complex the chemistry, the more options for nature to play tricks on us and replace crystals of one species with chemistry of another, preserving the original crystal shape. This piece, very unusual in our experience, consists of thick blocky crystals of duftite. The duftite is a 1-2 millimeter coating and/or partial alteration atop giant crystals of malachite, themselves an alteration after azurite. So, we have a complex specimen with giant green crystals! As the coating is thin and identifiable on all sides we see exposed, we are labeling this as duftite on malachite after azurite, but some people would simply say it is in the process of replacing it and call it a multiple pseudomorph. Cannot recall seeing another specimen quite like this.
