Grossular var. Hessonite Garnet
Among the most rare garnets in the USA are these sparkling, gemmy, cinnamon-orange crystals with immediately recognizable color from the remote mountaintops of the Cascades. Field collecting these hessonite garnets is extremely difficult and good specimens are seldom seen. This is a well-trimmed, display quality small cabinet piece. The majority of the garnets on this small cabinet piece are completely transparent and just glow with a rich cinnamon-orange hue that contrasts nicely with the medium greenish orange, granular, garnet-bearing skarn matrix. The sparkling crystals are all dodecahedrons that display very subtle striations on their diamond-shaped faces. Minor contacting along the edges of the garnets otherwise in excellent condition. Most of this material was collected in the 1970s by John Lindell, one of the most well-known of the collectors of this region of the USA. A truly rare "old style" specimen from the classic location, from modern finds. This is a new find from 2022, from workings by intrepid miners for James Zigras' mineral recovery company, who helicoptered into to collect on this old claim (under his lease at the time). It is very difficult to collect. He has not offered us any more of comparable quality in the years since, and we have heard the site is just almost impossible to get to anymore.
