Spinel
This is a sharp, glassy, translucent spinel crystal, from this famous gemstone mining district. There are many spinels one can acquire from old finds generally, but the color on this is particularly open and bright and eye catching. The crystal is 22 carats, with a rich maroon color, not red and not purple, but somewhere in between. Mogok is complicated these days, with strife and unrest. The mining infrastructure is largely demolished and old. Specimen production has steadily declined over the 2000s and is not expected to recover soon but even if it does, production is primarily for gem rough, not specimen preservation. Laszlo Kupi photo.
