The Nerchinsky District in eastern Russia has been known to produce fine large Topaz crystals for centuries but even now the individual sites are shrouded in mystery to the outside world. I guess this is not surprising given that it is such a vast and sparsely populated area. The Adun-Cholon Range is one of the most famous areas for Topaz and was discovered during the 1720s. To the north, pegmatites near Urulga River have also produced extremely fine Topaz crystals, including some with a bluish hue. This small cabinet sized specimen from Urulga River is a really excellent aggregate of large wedge-shaped Topaz crystals, the largest of which, at over 5 cm across, is a pale blue colour.
