Tsumeb mine has produced far and away the world's richest Mottramite (lead copper vanadate) specimens and somewhat remarkably for a rare species, in several distinctly different forms. These include casts after other species, superb small individual crystals and banded botryoidal crusts. Of this latter group, the colour can vary through several shades of green and the thickness of the layers from less than a millimetre up to several centimetres. However, I must confess to not having seen anything quite as impressive as the material recently unearthed in the generations-old Weyand collection kept in Tsumeb until earlier this year (2025). The quality of this Mottramite is insanely good, especially so for a species which elsewhere in the world only ever really forms microcrystals. This magnificent small cabinet-sized display specimen shows you how amazing this species is. Forming a heavy dense aggregate of pure Mottramite, it is not only this richness in volume, but its superb external visual properties which make it so wonderful. Side on, it can be seen that the Mottramite forms florette-like growths rising up to a satiny glossy botryoidal surface. The whole is an intensely dark green colour to almost black but it is its velvet-like lustre that really catches ones attention. In wonderful condition this is a world-class Mottramite and was probably mined at Tsumeb mine in the first half of the 20th century.
