Calcite
It is sometimes forgotten how good the Calcite is from Tsumeb mine. Because the mine is so revered for its remarkable diversity and quality of mineral species the more 'common' species sometimes get passed over. To me this is a major oversight, and this small cabinet Calcite does a fine job of showing why we should look more carefully at Tsumeb's Calcites. This piece both gorgeous and mesmerizing. The Calcite crystals take the form of simple, but perfect transparent rhomboids, aggregated together in a combination of parallel stacked crystals and offshoots. This stacking is geometrically very pleasing but it is the preferential colour zoning - which is consistently on one or two edges of the Calcite - which really elevates this specimen to the next level. This zoning is a striking red colour and is most likely caused by tiny inclusions of Hematite. The Calcite crystals are in extremely fine condition, with just one crystal showing rough sides from natural growth rather than impact damage. Ex Weyand collection.
