Calcite
North Vernon, Indiana was famous for its equant, rounded looking, golden calcites and this is a very good example with exceptional luster and color saturation. The big crystal here is nearly 7 cm across with an amazingly smooth and lustrous surface, and an alluring two-tone, honey-gold color! The big calcite is set on a sliver of matrix and has a smaller, 3 cm, strongly intergrown companion crystals at the base. The large calcite is a translucent amber-yellow through most of it, transitioning to a honey yellow on one side. Like most calcite crystals from here, all of the them display a highly modified rhombohedral habit making them look like they are rounded. The large crystal and the smaller ones to either side are in nearly perfect condition with only minor contacting to those at the base and a few small dings acceptable in context of size of the crystal for this location. This material is from the 1960s-1980s, generally. (Note from Rob - I went here to collect in 1989-90 and struck out, finding only a few small insignificant pale crystals!).
