Carrollite is a relatively rare copper-cobalt sulfide, especially in crystals as good this miniature cluster! The best crystals in the world originate from this locality, the Kamoya South II Mine in the DRC that was opened in 1998. Although seldom found in great crystals anywhere, there were a few large pockets found at this large open pit mine in the late 1990s and early 2000 years; and this incredible piece is from those early finds, Dr. Pohl purchased at the time they came out. The mirror-like, silver-gray metallic faces on the two large crystals are 2.2 and 2 cm, respectively. It has excellent composition, balance and perfection for a miniature of competition quality. It stands up, today, even despite a few new finds since of generally single crystals. The sharpness and isolation of the crystals as well as the aesthetics makes this a superior miniature for the discerning collector. A TRULY IMPECCABLE MINIATURE. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher #61384

Carrollite from Kamoya South II Mine, DR Congo
Kamoya South II is the modern benchmark locality for carrollite. Its best specimens have the look that made the species famous among contemporary sulfide collectors: brilliant silver to steel-gray crystals, often mirror-faced, with crisp spinel-family geometry set into pale calcite or dolomitic carbonate. The visual effect is unusually clean for a sulfide—hard, metallic geometry against light matrix—and the finest examples have enough reflectivity that the faces flash like cut metal when turned under a lamp.
