The Erika Pohl collection was known for her huge German suite, probably the single most all-encompassing suite of minerals from the German-speaking countries. However, few will be released for many years to come, as this was the core of the collection for so many decades. This is a big, beautiful, two-toned calcite crystal comprise this group from the Unterberg Quarry in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This is a greywacke (sandstone variety) quarry located south of Hasselfelde and was mined in the early 1900s. There are well over a half-dozen, larger, white and pink-red, somewhat barrel-shaped crystals of calcite and numerous smaller crystals of similar character scattered on them. The larger crystals are from 2 to 3.5 cm across and the smaller ones 3 mm to 1 cm in length. The calcites are translucent and have a preferential dusting of hematite just under the surface on one side of the piece resulting in the pinkish-red tint.
