Chalcopyrite
Chalcopyrite from this remote mine in Mexico used to be, when I was growing up in the 1980s, a legendary find of the species. Later, we had sharp crystals from Peru, then Russia in the 1990s, and later from China. But, through all of that, these classic old Mexican pieces (1950s-70s vintage) held their own and, importantly, remain unique in appearance for texture and overall form and style. They are recognizable to the trained eye, and stand out from others for a mix of crystal shapes, patina and color, and texture. This is a truly beautiful specimen from the famous collection of Jack Halpern of San Francisco, which he bought in the 1970s from Al Buranek. It is sharp, metallic and yet subtle at the same time. It has a glowing golden color tempered by the natural subtle patina of age. These are few and far between, today, in such size and condition. Note also the sharp twinning and several different crystal habits on the specimen.
