Mandan mine was a small, and ultimately unsuccessful copper mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA. Started in 1863, it was closed within three years. A second attempt in 1905 met with failure again, and it closed for the final time in 1909. Mineral specimens of any sort are extremely rare from Mandan mine, let alone Native Copper. This large miniature specimen from Mandan mine is a really strange looking thing. Initially looking like some sort of knot with thick Native Copper 'rope', closer inspection reveals that are several blocky Native Copper crystals present - one near to the affixed label, and another lower down near to the natural base of the specimen. Certainly a rare locality Native Copper for Michigan. Ex David Hardman collection, no. 3609.
