NATIVE Gold
Native Gold from Roşia Montană in Alba, Romania has such a distinctive appearance when on matrix and has been much sought after in collections for centuries. Its leaf-like, or foil-like form, is seen in 18th and 19th century museum collections across Europe and the world, with the earliest specimens simply recorded as from "Hungary", showing how borders have changed over time. This large miniature specimen is extremely distinctive, displaying the classic leaf Gold form upon finely crystallized Quartz, but unusually with white blades of Baryte. Baryte is recorded from the Roşia Montană mines, but virtually never seen in association with Native Gold. The individual leaves of Native Gold reach 8 mm in length and although most are smaller than this, they are richly aggregated across the surface of the specimen making for a delightful display. Ex Professor Werner Paar collection.
