Hematite ps. Calcite (twinned)$2,250.00

This is a great pseudomorph with noteworthy paragenesis and history from Germany. The most remarkable, although somewhat subtle aspect of this piece is the 5.3 cm nearly complete, doubly terminated and sharply twinned scalenohedral Calcite crystal that is partially "frozen" in the matrix at the top of the piece — it's perfectly preserved! You can see every intricate detail of the former Calcite crystal outline with it's super sharp edges and faces and the twin right in the middle of the crystal, which is just fabulous! The rest of the piece is subtle and complex too with a thick, one-inch band of Hematite at the base that has a brecciated (fractures and healed) margin on the top contact bounded by a vein of orangey-brown Siderite which formed later, probably during the brecciation/fracturing event in which it formed. This is an extremely large and fine example of this rare replacement to have survived 200 years and more (in an estate from 1740-1998). Great piece and historic: we obtained this from the estate sale in London of the long lost collection of Sir Robert Ferguson, 1769-1840. (We can send the buyer a recent article we published with MR in the book on the Halpern collection, which also had a specimen). We sold it to Stretch Young at the time we purchased a large part of this collection with John Veevaert, back in the day. Part of an educational set, with these additional items: Goethite ps. Hematite (SYP25-23a) and Calcite (twinned) (SYP25-23c).
