Emeralds have inspired lore, literature, and art for millennia. The finest specimens come from Columbia, where mining by indigenous Chibcha and Muzo tribes dates back to 500 A.D. Rarely preserved, crystals are often cut into gems, and matrix examples are exceedingly rare. This emerald displays intense color and glassy luster all perfectly contrasted by the white calcite matrix upon which it formed.
