Smithsonite is one of the signature species from Berg Aukas in Namibia, but most collectors would think of Descloizite first and foremost, simply based on its rarity factor worldwide. Another factor is that many Berg Aukas Smithsonite specimens got transported to Tsumeb where they were sold to collectors, who mistakenly assumed that they were from Tsumeb mine. This fine 'spiky' miniature Smithsonite actually overgrows thin blades of orange-brown Descloizite which confirms its correct provenance to Berg Aukas. The Smithsonite crystals are sharp narrow colourless to white, glassy rhombs clustered in small radiating sprays which makes for a distinctive display. Berg Aukas operated from 1913 until 1978 and most specimens date to that period of active mining.
