Galena
For all of its remarkable rare and colourful secondary mineral species Tsumeb mine has produced much fewer examples of primary mineral species. Part of the reason is undoubtedly that the extent of supergene oxidation was so great that little remained of the primary ore minerals, but the other factor is that collectors were simply drawn more passionately to the weird and wonderful secondary minerals. Galena - humble lead sulphide - is one of those primary minerals that is just never seen as crystals in Tsumeb mineral collections, making this small miniature specimen a real rarity, especially with its distinctive cubo-octahedral crystals. The largest crystal reaches 8 mm across, which ordinarily might seem small for a Galena crystal, but this is Tsumeb, and this piece is a collectors item for the Tsumeb aficionado.
