Hematite var. Specularite
Unknown Owner
This is a delicate beauty from the West Cumbrian iron mines. Well-known for Specularite - an unusual glossy black razor-sharp bladed form of crystallized Hematite - this quite large cabinet-sized plate is in remarkably fine condition. That said, it is on a very thin bed of banded botryoidal Hematite var. Kidney Ore which is prone to de-laminating if impacted. The whole upper surface (approximately 6 x 13 cm) of the specimen is coated with Specularite crystals 1 to 3 mm in size and careful inspection shows that there is virtually no impact damage which is unusual with Specularite. It is from Florence mine, one of the more recent occurrences.
