Topaz
Murzinka mine (Mursinsk), 70 miles north-northeast of Ekaterinburg in Sverdlovskaya Oblast', Middle Urals, Russia is a historically important granite pegmatite deposit within the Murzinka granite. These pegmatites have been known to produce gemstones since the 1720s, including Topaz, Beryl (Aquamarine and Heliodor) and Tourmaline. This lovely old-time small miniature Topaz with Quartz is actually labelled as from "Nischne Tagilsk", which is an iron mining town 40 miles to the west, but no Topaz has ever been found there. However, in common with many of the mining districts in Russia, specimens are transported to larger population centres where they are traded. This beautiful old Topaz is a fine crystal, at least 2 cm in length, perfectly transparent, and displaying the classic broad wedge-shaped termination. It has some contact damage in the form of a notch and cleavage fracture along one end of its termination, and a peculiar concentric, circular impact point on one prism face with an associated cleavage fracture. However, despite these, its front-facing crystal faces are extremely clean and bright and it displays remarkably well. The Topaz crystal sits upon a slightly smaller pale smoky prismatic Quartz crystal.
