Vivid color and great luster make this a spectacular miniature for your collection. This orpiment comes from perhaps the most famous locality for this species in the USA. Specimens of exceptional quality orpiment were first found by Newmont in 1999. They subsequently contacted and contracted collectors edge to recover the specimens to preserve them for historical and scientific purposes. The best of the specimens was donated to the Smithsonian by Newmont. This is a great example of the generosity and forethought of a large mining company such as Newmont to save these specimens from the crusher and allow them to be appreciated by generations to come.
