Cerussite

Unknown Owner
This large, cabinet-sized, dense aggregate of serrated bladed Cerussite crystals shows the scale of supergene oxidation presented by the deposits at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Despite its density, the specimen is full of gaps where the individual Cerussite crystals interlock, but as a lead mineral - lead carbonate - the weight is always evident. Texturally, some might call it a 'Jack Straw' habit, but the crystals are far more bladed. Strands of a dark grey mineral, or matrix, cut through several areas of the Cerussite. It has not been established what this is, but it is possibly a lead-based manganese oxide, such as Coronadite. Specifically from Broken Hill Proprietary mine, this is an important Australian Cerussite, and as one might expect it is from Milton Lavers' remarkable Broken Hill collection.
