Mimetite
Mount Bonnie mine in the remote Victoria-Daly Region of Northern Territory, Australia came to prominence during the 1980s when superb Mimetite crystals, some found in the late 1970s, came to the mineral market. These crystals are extremely distinctive, if not unique, displaying stocky hexagonal prismatic crystals with pronounced bevelled sloping pyramidal faces terminated by a basal pinacoid face. The Mimetite from Mount Bonnie mine is often a creamy shade of yellow and in this lovely miniature specimen it displays a very bright resinous lustre, something not seen so often from the locality. The Mimetite crystals are well-formed and reach up to 6 mm in length sat upon an iron-rich sinter-like gossan. The edges of the Mimetite crust are slightly damaged, but a line down the middle of the length of the coating displays very nicely formed crystals showing the classic crystal habit really well.
