Goethite coating Cerussite after Anglesite
The Kintore opencut at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia is famous for a rich supergene oxidation zone encountered within it during the late 1980s until about 1996. This large opencast produced not only the first samples of the rare lead iron phosphate hydroxide species subsequently named Kintoreite, but many other new secondary phosphate and arsenate species. Along with these new scientific discoveries came weird and wonderful forms of other species. One of the standout forms are Cerussite replacements, or pseudomorphs, after large sharp orthorhombic Anglesite crystals. These invariably feature a later coating of dark brown to black Goethite. This fine miniature specimen from Kintore opencut is from Milton Lavers' famous Broken Hill collection. The largest crystal is 1.7 cm in length, but there are several other large and extremely well-formed crystals in evidence too. There is no damage, making this a choice Broken Hill miniature of this well-known, but rarely seen form of pseudomorph.
