Mimetite (one time find circa 1998)
Although this small mine was known since the early 20th Century, it was abandoned until serious collecting took place in 1998 and a small production came to market at one single Tucson show in the year following; and it stopped almost as quickly as it started. Only a limited number of good Mimetite specimens were produced in that short time. This colorful small cabinet piece is a great example from that find! It consists of lustrous, partially gemmy to translucent, lemon-yellow to yellow-orange, short hexagonal prisms from 2 mm to 1 cm in size that cover almost the entire display face. The surface just scintillates with all of the Mimetites and there must be over one hundred! The majority are stubby, hexagonal, brightly colored crystals that display luminous yellow internal reflections, especially in the more transparent crystals. They contrast well with the orange-brown, Goethite-stained gossan. A super showy piece from this limited find where no more came out and great specimens like this are very uncommon today. A rare and old specimen, from a single one-time find not equaled or seen since. It has unusually fine surface richness and display quality, with no damage of note and a pristine and bright yellow color without brown hues. We have not had a better one in over a decade.
