These cherry red gem rhodonites look like nothing so much as cherry Jolly Rancher candies! The best of them came out only recently, and many went to the gem rough market for cutting, to make into gemstones. The color, luster, internal brightness, and quality is world class...better than all but the very best of the old Aussie rhodonites from turn of the 1900s, which are valued as if they are made of platinum (while these are only valued as if they were gold, I suppose). This is a perfect balanced thumbnail with shape, color, and a nice proportion. It is contacted or perhaps slightly cleaved on the back, although difficult to tell in any case. Very little lighting is needed to make these glow, when at their best, as is this. The first round of larger crystals from here, of which we handled quite a few, were huge and colorful, but not of this gem cutting quality. This mine was worked as far back as the 1800s for manganese and nothing like this was ever seen. Who knows if and when we will see another find. They are, meanwhile, world class level thumbnails of a surprising species in the best of colors.
