Calcite
Calcite was ubiquitous throughout the Tsumeb orebody and its variety of habits appear to know no bounds! We already know from Victor Goldschmidt’s Atlas der Krystallformen (1913) that Calcite vastly outnumbers any other species in habit and the specimens from Tsumeb exemplify this. I must have seen and handled hundreds of Tsumeb Calcites, yet this cabinet specimen appears quite different from anything before. Individual crystals form long, slightly bowing, curved blades which curve back in to form a pointed termination. They are feather-like with the profile of a Roman sword, strange bedfellows yet aesthetic. Such individual crystals cluster to form this good sized specimen, resulting in an overall appearance of snow white feathered plumes. Attached to the Calcite at one side and to the base are two shards of pale pinkish cream Dolomite with a very fine grained texture.
